Buffalo, NY – Sheas Performing Arts Center unveiled its 2003-2004 season at a gala event Wednesday night. The evening was filled with the celebration of another record breaking season. And the promise of another one next year.
The something for everyone season kicks off with Broadway's biggest award winning new show, "Thoroughly Modern Millie." The show takes audiences back to the jazz age in the Big Apple when modern was all the rage.
And staying with new trends, "Starlight Express" and "Movin' Out" are two new touring shows making early stops in Buffalo. But if it's the classics you like, don't stray far from the box office. The "Sound of Music" and "Oklahoma" are also coming to town. And there's a recent classic favorite making a return visit. "Les Miserables" storms the stage for five days next spring.
Before the current season even wraps up, Albert Nocciolino, producer for the Sheas' Broadway series, says they already know they have exceeded box office sales from the previous record breaking season. "Jesus Crist Superstar" was a bigger than expected hit. And the two week engagement of "Mamma Mia!" sold out. That's why it's making a special engagement return next year.
But Sheas President Tony Conte says the best news about the theatre's success is that it doesn't dependent on the popularity of individual shows. Season ticket sales also broke a new record.
Conte says it's that kind of strong commitment that's making the job of booking bigger and better shows, easier every year. Conte says Buffalo is no longer an after thought on tour schedules.
Already on the schedule for 2004-2005 is Disney's the "Lion King." The early announcement is being used as a little bait. Season ticket holders for the 2003-2004 season will be ensured seats to see Simba and the gang.
