Remembering New Yorkers Killed in the War in Iraq

Buffalo, NY – As of May 26, 2004, New York has had 33 troop casualties in the war in Iraq. The list of names is confirmed from family members or the military. Those from Western New York are highlighted in bold.

DEATHS:

-Marine Lance Cpl. Eric J. Orlowski, 26, Buffalo; accidental discharge of .50-caliber machine gun in Iraq, March 22, 2003.

-Marine Pfc. Tamario D. Burkett, 21, Buffalo; unit came under attack while securing a bridge on the outskirts of Nasiriyah, Iraq, March 23, 2003.

-Marine Cpl. Robert M. Rodriguez, 21, New York; tank fell into the Euphrates River during combat northwest of Nasiriyah, Iraq, March 23, 2003.

-Marine Lance Cpl. William W. White, 24, New York; non-hostile vehicle accident in Iraq, March 29, 2003.

-Army Sgt. Eugene Williams, 24, Highland; car-bomb incident in Iraq, March 29, 2003.

-Marine Cpl. Bernard G. Gooden, 22, Mount Vernon; killed in a firefight in central Iraq, April 4, 2003.

-Army Pfc. Gregory P. Huxley, Jr., 19, Forestport; killed by enemy fire in Baghdad, April 6, 2003.

-Marine Staff Sgt. Riayan A. Tejeda, 26, New York; killed in combat in Baghdad, April 11, 2003.

-Army Spc. Rasheed Sahib, 22, New York; another soldier's accidental weapon discharge hit him in the chest in Balad, Iraq, May 18, 2003.

-Army Pvt. David Evans, Jr., 18, Buffalo; working security at a munitions facility when an explosion collapsed his steel shelter in Diwaniyah, Iraq, May 25, 2003.

-Army Pfc. Raheen Tyson Heighter, 22, Bay Shore; convoy came under enemy fire north of Hawd, Iraq, July 24, 2003.

-Army Sgt. Heath A. McMillin, 29, Canandaigua; came under attack from rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire south of Baghdad, July 27, 2003.

-Army Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Robsky, Jr., 31, Elizaville; attempting to neutralize an improvised explosive device when it detonated in Baghdad, Sept. 10, 2003.

-Army Staff Sgt. Kevin C. Kimmerly, 31, North Creek; vehicle hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Baghdad, Sept. 15, 2003.

-Army Sgt. David Travis Friedrich, 26, Hammond; died when mortars hit a base near the Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad, Sept. 20, 2003.

-Army Spc. Michael L. Williams, 46, Buffalo; vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device near Baghdad, Oct. 17, 2003.

-Army Pfc. Rayshawn Johnson, 20, Brooklyn; vehicle hit land mine in Tikrit, Iraq, Nov. 3, 2003.

-Army Sgt. Linda C. Jimenez, 39, New York; injured in a fall in Baghdad on Oct. 31, 2003; died at a hospital in Washington, D.C., Nov. 8, 2003.

-Army Pfc. Jacob S. Fletcher, 28, Bay Shore; on a bus when an improvised explosive device went off in Samarra, Iraq, Nov. 13, 2003.

-Army Spc. Irving Medina, 22, Middletown; convoy hit by an explosive device in Baghdad, Nov. 14, 2003.

-Army Capt. George A. Wood, 33, Marcy; tank rolled over an explosive device in Baqouba, Iraq, Nov. 20, 2003.

-Army Pfc. Charles E. Bush, Jr., 43, Buffalo; convoy vehicle hit by explosive in Balad, Iraq, Dec. 19, 2003.

-Army Pfc. Luis A. Moreno, 19, New York; shot while guarding a gas station in Baghdad, Jan. 23, 2004; died on Jan. 29, 2004.

-Army Sgt. Thomas D. Robbins, 27, Schenectady; killed when explosives detonated while being moved to a demolition point in Sinjar, Iraq, Feb. 9, 2004.

-Army Spc. Roger C. Ling, 20, Douglaston; killed in an attack of small-arms fire and an improvised explosive device in Khalidiyah, Iraq, on Feb. 19, 2004.

-Army Spc. Doron Chan, 20, Highland; killed when his convoy vehicle flipped over near Balad, Iraq, March 18, 2004.

-Army Sgt. David McKeever, 25, Buffalo; unit was attacked by a rocket-propelled grenade in Baghdad, April 5, 2004.

-Army Spc. Isaac Michael Nieves, 20, Unadilla; killed when individuals using explosives and small-arms fire attacked his combat patrol in Bani Saad, Iraq, April 8, 2004.

-Army Pfc. Nathan P. Brown, 21, South Glens Falls; patrol was ambushed in Samarra, Iraq, April 11, 2004.

-Marine Cpl. Kevin T. Kolm, 23, Hicksville; killed by hostile fire in the Anbar province of Iraq, April 13, 2004.

-Marine Cpl. Jason L. Dunham, 22, Allegany; died from hostile fire in the Anbar province, Iraq, April 22, 2004.

-Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal, 24, Smithtown; killed in a waterborne attack on an oil pumping station in the Persian Gulf, April 24, 2004.

-Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Michael J. Pernaselli, 27, Brighton; killed in a waterborne attack on the Basra oil terminal in the Persian Gulf, April 24, 2004.
