Buffalo, NY – An exhibit that chronicles 50 years of smoking-related political cartoons will be on display at Buffalo Niagara International Airport this month.
It's called "Cartoonists Take Up Smoking." It retraces the era of the anti-tobacco movement of the past 50 years through the eyes of some of the nation's leading newspaper editorial cartoonists. Among them is Buffalo native and current Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles.
Dr. Michael Cummings, chairman of the Department of Health Behavior at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, said the airport is an appropriate location for this exhibit. He said flight attendants were early advocates of eliminating smoking on all aircraft.
Cummings said the exhibit will include some historical artifacts as well as reproductions of the cartoons. One of the artifacts is a packet a free cigarettes that were once offered by an airline. The exhibit will be on display in the airport's art galley located just inside the entrance.
