Buffalo, NY – American Axle and Manufacturing Chief Executive Richard Dauch says the company will idle its Buffalo plant.
Autoworkers in Buffalo last month said the company had "unofficially" told them the plant on East Delavan Avenue would close for good when the union contract expires in March.
Friday's announcement came as the Detroit-based auto parts supplier reported a 67% rise in earnings on cost cuts and efficiency improvements for the second quarter.
Dauch said the company is doing more work in its plants outside the United States.
More than 650 employees at the plant will lose their jobs.
American Axle continues to operate plants in Cheektowaga and Tonawanda.
