Buffalo, NY – It's the time of the year when teenagers begin looking for summer jobs. But this year's job search will be difficult. Young people will be competing for jobs with laid-off adults.
The Northeastern University Center for Labor Market Studies offers a sobering assessment of the job market for teens in its latest report. Last summer, just one third of all teens in the nation had a summer job. Just eight years ago, that figure stood at 45 percent. And the hiring environment this summer will be even worse.
Bruce Herman is deputy commissioner of the State Labor Department. During an appearance in Buffalo earlier this week, Herman acknowledged teens are competing with adults for jobs.
