Corfu, NY – A tornado touching down in the Genesee County town of Corfu Saturday caused a four mile path of destruction, including downed trees, damaged buildings and severed power lines. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Debris littered streets to the point that Route 77 had to be temporarily closed. The tornado was rated an EF1 storm, ranking low on the intensity scale, but still bringing winds that at times could have exceeded one hundred miles per hour.
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported about 30 homes and businesses suffered moderate damage by winds that ranged from 86 mph to 100 mph.
Meteorologist Dave Zaff says the service hope to inspect the damage Sunday to determine whether a tornado actually hit.
Genesee County wasn't alone in experiencing extreme weather. Trees were also downed in Niagara County and large hail stones were reported falling in parts of Erie County.
