The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas has taken top honors at the American Legion National Convention in Indianapolis. This is the band's 22nd National Championship in its 90-year history.
"After an intense week of preparation, the 30 minute performance drew cheers, a rousing applause and a standing ovation from the audience," said Band President David Abrahamian.
The all-volunteer 80-member band, under the direction of Conductor Michael Shaw, earned a top score of 95.8 out of 100. The winning performance included "Espirit de Corps" by Robert Jager, "The Gallant 7th March" by John Philip Sousa and "Ballet Sacra" by David Holsinge.
The Joliet American Legion Band from Joliet, IL took 2nd Place with a score of 93.5. The Oconomowoc American Legion Band from Oconomowoc, WI took 3rd Place (88.5), the Kansas City American Legion Band from Kansas City, MO took 4th Place (88.3) and the American Legion Post 377 Band from Kenner, LA took 5th place (82.3).
The American Legion National Convention held its 2019 National Concert Band Contest in Indianapolis on Saturday, drawing bands from around the country. It also was the 100th anniversary of the American Legion.
