Buffalo's first charter school is saying good-bye to its founder. Dr. Claity Massey is retiring. Massey formed King Center 13-years ago at the former St. Mary of Sorrows Church on Genesee Street.
Thursday morning the school held a special ceremony in her honor. The State Regents recently granted the school a five-year charter renewal.
Regents Chancellor Emeritus Bob Bennett attended the celebration saying he would eventually like to see a 10-year charter granted to the school.
Massey tells WBFO News that would be a huge step forward in maintaining the future of all charter schools.
The current charter renewal will allow King Center to expand to full K-through 8th grade.

Bennett said King Center is "really what a school should be."
Massey retires at the end of this month. Dr. Keith Frome will assume leadership. Frome is a nationally well-known educator.
