New York State, in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will begin distributing COVID vaccinations at the Delavan Grider Community Center in Buffalo. But beginning Wednesday morning, Buffalo residents living in certain neighborhoods are given the opportunity to be the first to schedule appointments.
Starting at 8 a.m., the Delavan Grider site will schedule appointments for eligible residents living with ZIP Codes identified by state leaders as neighborhoods where vaccinations rates are lower.
The ZIP Codes identified for the Buffalo site are 14201, 14204, 14208, 14209, 14211, 14212, 14213, 14214, 14215 and 14222.
It's one of six sites that are giving priority to eligible individuals living within communities deemed vulnerable and where vaccinations are reported to be at a lower rate. Gov. Andrew Cuomo explained it during a recent briefing, as sign-ups were about to begin at the first new mass vaccination sites in Brooklyn and Queens.
Those sites, which begin distributing shots today, are prepared to administer up to 3,000 doses per day. The sites in Buffalo and three other locations which begin giving out shots March 3 are expected to handle 1,000 doses daily.
“Same basic concept. Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, Yonkers, sites again located in socially vulnerable communities with low vaccination rates," Cuomo said during a February 19 briefing. "Scheduling will open on Wednesday at 8 a.m. Again, there's one week for residents of the zip codes with the low vaccination rates to make their appointments.”
One the first day of shots in Buffalo, all other Erie County residents eligible to receive the vaccine under the current phase may schedule an appointment at Delavan Grider.
