New federal funding has been targeted for the Western New York region to shore up security at international points of entry. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand were instrumental in funneling more than $800,000 of Homeland Security funding into a pair of programs that will enhance local law enforcement at overland passages into the country as well as at the Port of Buffalo.
Specifics as to how the money will be spent were not offered, but both Senators mentioned the significance of recognizing Buffalo as an important international border site.
