New York State's two US Senators, Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gilibrand, have announced funding for improvements to a pair of Western New York fire departments. The Buffalo Fire Department and the West Seneca Fire District will be receiving nearly $70,000 each. The funds derive from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

In Buffalo, the funding will be used to improve programs that help firefighters deal with mental health and overall wellness issues. The West Seneca District will be updating its communication equipment that connects firefighters and their dispatchers.
The competitive grants are awarded to applicants who demonstrate financial need as well as desired improvements that align with the program's priorities.
