Charlie the Butcher is celebrating 100 years of doing business in Buffalo this week by offering customers a card that will get you a free Beef on Weck on your next birthday.
Charlie the Butcher is actually Charlie Roesch, although he jokes that folks think his last name is butcher.
Roesch said his grandfather started the business as a wholesale meat market outdoors here in Buffalo in 1914. His dad and uncle later took it over. Ultimately, Charlie graduated college and took the reigns.
Through it all, the business has progressed from that outdoor meat market to the Broadway Market to what we now know as Charlie the Butcher today with seven locations, catering and even showing up at your local supermarket. Roesch said the secret to his success is tweaking the business every five to seven years.
So what's next for Charlie?
"We're very lucky now. We want to see something, maybe, something going on with all the stuff going on downtown. We're looking at different opportunities. There's been some interest in Charlie the Butcher Beef and a Beer type-concepts," said Roesch.
Charlie adds it's important to listen to your customers, which he will continue to do.
