A popular walkway along Buffalo's waterfront will soon be extended. An expansion of the Canalside boardwalk is now officially underway.
Sam Hoyt, regional president of the Empire State Development Corporation, was among those on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning.
"When you think about boardwalks on the waterfront, you think of the wooden wharf that exists on the northern section. We've had this temporary asphalt boardwalk for too long. So we're completing the job. We're adding the wooden boardwalk to the end of the property. It's an additional 500 feet of boardwalk," said Hoyt.
The project also includes landscaping, an expansion of the artistic fencing and increasing the size of the children's beach.

"This is a great extension of the boardwalk. It fits in great with the Niagara River Greenway Commission vision. They're always looking for connective bike and walking paths," said Lou Paonessa, Community Affairs Director of the New York Power Authority, whose dollars are paying for the project.
The project is expected to be completed by April.
