With the first blast coming just after seven this morning, the towering structure of the old Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital began to slide into itself and as the blast continued, the old structure imploded into a pile of debris. That's a pile of debris which will take three months to remove, as work continues on a $150 million redevelopment of the site into a mixed community of housing, retail and commercial space. Mayor Brown says Delaware Avenue and Gates Circle will look different.
"It's going to be a shock initially. This building has been here for more than 100 years. It's going to be a void in the landscape of Delaware Avenue."

Within minutes, construction workers and street sweepers were out on Gates Circle and Delaware removing dust from the blast. The hospital closed in 2011 as its medical facilities were moved to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
