Clean renewable energy is now flowing on the Seneca Nation's Allegany Territory.
Tribal leaders cut the ribbon recently on a new solar array, in Steamburg, about 65 miles south of Buffalo. Seneca Energy Director, Anthony Giacobbe says, the project will save residents on the Allegany Territory about $25.00 a month on their electric bill. And Giacobbe says, solar is also good for the environment.
"We're always trying to make decisions for those future seven generations and try to preserve the Earth. And the renewables really line up very well with that. Between the two projects makes about 120 million pounds of carbon that we're reducing over the 25 year life cycle for the project," Giacobbe said.
In April, the Senecas cut the ribbon on a new wind turbine in Irving. So far this year, Giacobbe says, the nation has put about 3.6 megawatts of renewable energy on line benefiting a total of around 400 electric customers. And, he says, the projects have created three new full-time jobs on Seneca Territory.
