Ceremonies were held across the region Tuesday to commemorate the 17th Anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. In Buffalo, fire fighters held a large American flag from the pedestrian bridge over the Sqajaquada Expressway, in Delaware Park.
They were joined by several members of the military and local residents. The event was organized by Laurie Kostrzewski. She's been pushing for several years to get the bridge renamed the Sqajaquada 9/11 Memorial Bridge or the 9/11 Heroes Bridge.
"What we're doing is we're honoring our first responders and we're honoring the memory of those that died in that event, both the victims in the buildings and on the airplanes. And also the first responders that sacrificed their life to help save lives," Kostrzewski said.
At the end of the patriotic ceremony, Kostrzewski told those in attendance, that it's the first time - in the 15 years that she's been organizing the event - that it has rained.
"But if you were to have asked 3,000 people who died that day if they would have wanted to have a rainy day in their life again? They would have all said yes. So, I thank you for coming. It's okay that it's raining," Kostrzewski said.
She says the state senate has approved the bridge renaming bill but it remains stuck in the assembly.
