Election Day 2018 could usher in a new era of Democratic control in the state legislature. The Dems have a firm grip on the Assembly. But Republicans only hold a one vote majority in the Senate - and competitive races are underway in several districts downstate.
Senator Patrick Gallivan, an Elma Republican says, if his party loses control of the Senate it will effect the quality of life of upstate residents. Gallivan says, in 2009-2010, the Senate majority and leadership came from New York City.
"So, I think, the fight so to speak, with this one vote majority, is about our way of life and about upstate and balance and representation," Gallivan said.

But, the region could benefit, if Democrats win control of the chamber. That's because Senator Tim Kennedy is poised for a leadership role. Kennedy says he's looking forward to delivering more for Buffalo and Western New York.
"There's no question in my mind that with a Democratic majority in the senate we will accomplish many more of those goals that are important to working families," Kennedy said.

Both Kennedy and Gallivan are seeking reelection unopposed.
