Nominations opened Tuesday for the 2020 Preservation Awards. The annual honors recognize the region’s best historic preservation and education projects, as well as the community advocates who spearhead them.
The awards are presented by Preservation Buffalo Niagara, a nonprofit organization that protects and promotes the unique architecture and historic legacy of the greater Buffalo area.
“We like to think of the city of Buffalo as a 40-square-mile outdoor museum. When you look across the landscape, there’s really not much that you can’t see or learn about multiple styles of architecture, multiple planning interventions,” said PBN Executive Director Jessie Fisher. “The story of America is really written in the physical story of the city of Buffalo.”
Fisher said PBN will accept online nominations for the 2020 awards through Friday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. for a wide range of projects and individuals deserving of recognition.
“Everything from individual houses to big, exciting 30-story building projects to the nice neighborhood tour that really made you think about the city differently—all those kinds of things are welcome.”
Fisher added that PBN is committed to empowering local residents to protect historic sites across all of Buffalo’s neighborhoods.
“We want to be technical resources. We want to be guides,” Fisher said. “We want to help you invest in your neighborhood and your community, and we think that’s the way that we’ll all be most strong together.”
Past Preservation Award winners include Hotel Henry, the King Urban Life Center, Buffalo Architectural Casting, Tipico Coffee and Boston Valley Terra Cotta. The 2020 honorees will be celebrated at a ceremony on May 14 at the Darwin Martin House’s Greatbatch Pavilion.
