It appears longtime 26th District Rep. Brian Higgins will have competition in next year's election.
On Thursday, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Steven Sams II announced his candidacy for the seat. Sams has over 10 years of military service, but his military career ended as he is now a 90% disabled combat veteran.
In a statement, Sams said he is running because of what he sees as divisions and government overreach, adding that "unity in Western New York is my top priority."
He is critical of the failure of party politics and the effect it has on the everyday life of average people. For example, Sams wants the funds from the federal infrastructure bill to make a difference in people's lives, or as he said, "not just continuing to improve Canalside or the waterfront."
He has set up a campaign website.
